Youth in Action Group Updates

Scarsdale High School
Scarsdale, New York

The Scarsdale Youth in Action Group is very excited about the new Alternative Income campaign! They have already held multiple fundraisers including a carnival. At the carnival, the Scarsdale members split up into groups of two and each group held a booth with a game, such as donut bobbing, pie in the face, musical twister, and bowling. The Scarsdale Middle School Youth in Action group helped and held booths of their own!

About a hundred youth from the neighborhood came in costume to participate. Many of these youth were so inspired by what they learned that they are going to set up their own Youth in Action groups.

Scarsdale’s next fundraiser for the Alternative Income campaign will take place this holiday season. As in years past, they will set up a gift wrapping booth in front of Toys R’ Us! While Youth in Action members wrap, they will inform the customers about Free The Children and the Alternative Income campaign. Toys R’ Us has even agreed to donate wrapping paper!

Keep up the incredible work!

The East Coast is embracing the Be The Change Tour! Louise Kent, along with Bartek Kosinski, recently traveled to Nova Scotia and New Brunswick, empowering young people in schools and universities to get involved in the issues they are passionate about. Boy, could you feel the ENERGY!

Louise’s inspirational stories and music have made an impact on the region, and we’re already planning on having her back with us in January and early February! To you East Coasters, please let me know if you’d like to have the Be The Change tour come to your school; this is an opportunity you DO NOT want to miss!

Hello everyone,

Much is happening here in Québec! We’ve had everything from information booths, to food sales (everyone loves Samosas!), to benefit concerts, and lots in between! A highlight for me was “Party for Peace,” an annual fundraiser held by McGill University’s Youth in Action group. Many students gathered for incredible live entertainment and many new friends were made! The theme this year was Kenya, and the group put together an incredible slide show of Kenya information, facts, and pictures that looped throughout the night.

We have many things to look forward to here in December (other than piles of snow)!  We are having our Holiday Party on December 16, and there are various fundraisers and speeches that will be going on before then. If you live in Québec and would like information, please email me.

Thanks to all the amazing youth here in Québec for making this month so memorable! You’ve all accomplished so much and you’re doing a fantastic job!

Keep up the good work and keep in touch,
~ Jaclyn :0)

We recently visited our province’s capital, Victoria. We were so impressed with the amazing action Victoria youth are taking that we wanted to share their news with you!

Sara Panton is a grade 11 student whose goal is to build a school in Sierra Leone by the time she graduates.  She is well on her way with lots of amazing fundraisers planned, including an upcoming Vow of Silence campaign!

Spectrum High School students were proud to share news of their Brick by Brick campaign to build a school in Sierra Leone, their Spectrum Idol contest, which is in full swing, and an upcoming talent show to raise funds for their last few bricks!

St. Michael’s University School has Kenya projects in mind, including fundraising to build a school and sending students to volunteer overseas. Their first fundraiser was a successful leaf-raking extravaganza which brought in $1000!

St. Margaret’s School has donated money for the reconstruction of a school in Sri Lanka, and is looking forward to their new Alternative Income poster to continue providing children with the opportunity to attend school.

While in Victoria, we were reminded of the importance of children helping children through education when we spoke about the film The Devil’s Miner, at the Amnesty International Film Festival.  The protagonist of this film is 14-year-old Basilio, who works in a Bolivian silver mine. Basilio, and the millions of other child labourers around the world, deserve the opportunity to go to school to lay foundations for a healthy future. That’s why we are so proud to be working with Free The Children’s network of young people who are taking action to make this ideal a reality!
