An outreach coordinator speaks out about beginning a new journey to inspire thousands

2007/2008 could be the best year ever!

As the end of another school year approaches, it’s a great time to reflect on all the amazing things young people across North America have accomplished during their Year of We.

This year marked the building of Free The Children’s 500th school, the launch of the We Generation website and the first National Me to We Day! We were able to give away three trips to Ecuador to some of our amazing youth in action and, to top it all off, we held an amazing Free The Children youth leadership conference. Additionally, Craig and Marc were featured on TV shows from eTalk Daily, to Degrassi: The Next Generation, to CBC News: Sunday. and The Oprah Winfrey Show.

We also learned a great deal about how diverse and passionate the largest network of children helping children through education really is. Through online polls we found that local poverty, the environment and international issues rank among the most important topics for today’s youth and doctors, social workers and athletes top the list of future dream jobs. While 67 % of We Generation users said they’d most like to travel to Kenya, an impressive 25 % chose Russia as their country of interest! Perhaps the most remarkable thing about all of our different choices is that it hasn’t stopped us from coming together through our passion for social change.

The end of the school year also gave us a chance to collect important information on the changes you’d like to see made on the We Generation, a tool we hope you continue to use while you change the world. If you haven’t done so already, take this chance to let us know how to make our online youth hub better by filling out this survey.

The coming year promises to be even bigger and better! More than 600 schools have already signed up to take part in National Me to We Day and here in the Youth Department, we’re already revamping resources and boosting ourselves up for next year. Stay tuned for more opportunities and tools that will definitely inspire you to start action planning in preparation for the fall!
