Take Action! Day: An Urban Adventure
 Take Action! in Toronto.
Every summer, youth from around the world make a pilgrimage to Toronto. Constantly striving to turn their passion into action, they head directly to the Toronto Take Action! Academy. A highlight of the Academy is Take Action! Day—the newest Academy tradition and a key part of the week.
On Take Action! Day, over a hundred young people disperse into downtown Toronto. Learning directly from organizations and individuals already creating waves of change, Academy participants learn, collaborate and volunteer to keep the waves flowing. There are opportunities for every interest. Last year’s adventurers visited a Habitat for Humanity build, local homeless shelters, urban conservation efforts, the Toronto Star newspaper, MuchMusic and more!
One group of participants was passionate about using their pens and pencils to build a better world—and they weren’t talking about a new Habitat for Humanity building technique. The group spent the morning at Canadian Living magazine, where they learned the ins and outs of journalism from professional writers and editors, as well as how to get published. They were even invited to attend an editorial meeting to help provide content for an upcoming issue of Canadian Living.
The group’s next stop was the Toronto Star newspaper building to learn about how a major daily newspaper operates. Sitting down with reporters and editors, the group got a first-hand account of the dynamic industry of frontline journalism. At the end of the day, each participant had a deeper understanding of how media can be used by youth to make their voices heard.
Are you ready to discover your passions? Put them into action? Leaders Today and Free The Children invite you to join us at the Take Action! Academy this August 6-12.
