Kate Somers leads Lawrence Park to big change for Kenya

Kate Somers, a student at Lawrence Park Collegiate Institute in Toronto, has spearheaded a movement at her school to raise funds to build a school in Kenya. In less than four months as the leader of the Free The Children Club at Lawrence Park, Kate has motivated her schoolmates to raise over $8,500 to provide access to education for children in a rural community in Kenya. Thanks to their efforts, students in Kenya will be able to break the cycle of poverty, and attend a brand new school to start or continue their education.

Kate and her friends are part of a larger network of Toronto District School Board students who are committed to social action with Free The Children, and as an organization, we are very excited to work with young people like Kate.

The Free The Children Club at Lawrence Park has been working with other clubs and committees at the school to make sure other students in Toronto have the opportunity to expand their learning beyond the classroom. With help from educators and administrators, the students have had great success with all kinds of fundraisers this year, and have been steadily sending their donations into the Free The Children office. We look forward to continuing to work with this committed group of students again next year!
