On Sunday, a group of Nevada Union students will take to the streets to participate in Halloween for Hunger, a local initiative supporting food banks through the collection of nonperishable food items. This initiative was adopted in 2000 by Free the Children, the largest network of children helping children.

The event is being organized by the students of Nevada Union High School who are a part of the NU Free the Children Club. Their goal is to collect 1,000 nonperishable food items this Halloween to support the Grass Valley Food Bank and help make sure that the hungry in our area have enough to eat.
The action begins at 1 p.m. Followed by drivers, teams of young activists will be dressed in costume and ready to trick or treat for food items. These students will be trick or treating in the residential areas surrounding downtown Nevada City and Grass Valley and in the Via Vista and Morgan Ranch areas. If you do not live in these areas and still wish to donate, a truck will be parked in the NU parking lot by the Don Bagget Theater ready to accept donations.

Update: Nevada Union Halloween for Hunger a Success!
The Nevada Union Youth in Action group’s Halloween for Hunger campaign was a great success! Nevada Union had 13 members collecting food on Halloween in complete costume, including a spectacular huge-shoed, big-nosed clown. With some stellar teamwork, Nevada Union managed to collect more food for their local food bank than they ever expected!
The Nevada Union Youth in Action group was started two years ago by Anina Tweed and Alicia Siesie after seeing a movie about Craig Kielburger and Free The Children in their history class. Boasting a membership of twenty-four, the group began planning Halloween for Hunger in September, discussing the campaign at their weekly meetings. To get the word out, they printed flyers, which they posted in various locations throughout the community, and they submitted a press release to their local newspaper, The Union. All their planning and dedication paid off with a great Halloween, and we look forward to hearing about their next exciting campaign! |
