Youth in Action Group Updates

A Boy and His Chickens

We recently heard the story of a 12-year-old boy named Colin Lancashire who is doing his part to change the world.

When Colin heard about Free The Children, he immediately decided that he had to help. He could not believe that there were so many children in the world who did not have the opportunity to go to school. His first action was to donate all of his allowance to Free The Children. But he wanted to do more! He recognized that there was so much to be done and that he needed a sustainable way to continually donate to Free The Children. After much discussion with his family, he decided to buy baby chicks and sell their eggs when the chicks grew up.

Colin recently sold his very first egg and donated all of the proceeds to Free The Children!

He said that he has "...learned that no matter how old you are, you can always find a way to help make a difference in someone else's life."

A huge congratulations to Colin for showing that everyone can make a difference in the world!

British Columbia

A big hello all the way from the West Coast!

Things out here are going fantastic! British Columbia is full of Level 3 energy and enthusiasm. This year is going to rock!

Members of the Greater Vancouver Area Free The Children Youth in Action Group had their first meeting. The entire group is super-excited to participate in Free The Children's campaigns, especially the Vow of Silence. They hope to get as many youth as possible taking a Vow of Silence on March 1st to raise awareness for all the youth in the world who don't have a voice. Good luck!

Quebec

Hi all!

Everyone involved in Free The Children in Quebec is off to a fantastic start, and we’re already working hard to create even more positive change in the world this year! Youth in Action groups are expanding (how can new members resist our Level 3 energy?), goals are being set, and fundraising events have already taken place.

In fact, I recently paid a visit to John Abbott College, a CEGEP in Saint-Anne-de-Bellevue. Clubs from the entire school joined together in the Mardi Gras theme to fundraise for Free The Children's Hurricane Katrina relief efforts.

Congratulations to John Abbott and Free The Children!

We have so many great upcoming events in Quebec! From our rock-n-roll with Battle of the Bands, Party for Peace, coffee houses, to conferences, how could this year be anything but fantastic!?

So take a moment to pat yourselves on the back, and then get ready to make even more of a difference. Working together, we can accomplish so much and make our dreams a reality.

Autumn in Nova Scotia

Spotlight on:

The University of King's College Youth in Action Group
Halifax, Nova Scotia

Two weeks ago, on a sunny Saturday afternoon in the middle of Halifax, Nova Scotia, 200 freshmen students and their frosh leaders joined together for the largest Charity Frosh Day the campus of King's College had ever seen! Members of the Kings Free the Children Youth in Action Group had spent weeks preparing for their first-of-the-year event to raise money for a school they are building in Sierra Leone through the Adopt a Village campaign, and the participants were enthusiastic and optimistic.

And their enthusiasm didn’t fade throughout the day when each group was given two hours to go out and raise money in the city. There were some fun-credible

Charity Dodgeball Game at the University of King's College, Halifax, Nova Scotia

and creative fundraisers floating around such as face painting, a lemonade stand, a whipped cream pie-in-the-eye contest, and a number of buskers doing ballet, sketch comedy, a charity dodgeball game, and playing the bagpipes. After a mere two hours of FUN-draising and excitement, the groups came together and found out they had raised $2,300 for their schoolbuilding campaign. Congratulations to the King's College Youth in Action Group, and keep up the awesome work!

“The cool thing is that Halifax has such a close connection with Sierra Leone. There's a large population in the city that has relatives who immigrated to Sierra Leone in the 1800s. The black loyalists that came to Canada from the States were given poor land in Halifax, and so some of them decided not to stay and moved to Sierra Leone. Many of them still kept their connection with Halifax, though. That's one of the many reasons we decided to choose the schoolbuilding area that we did, and I think it really helped personalize the campaign for the frosh and frosh leaders who are from the Halifax area.”
