Young Kenyan poets express gratitude for their new school

Kenyan students come together to celebrate in song, dance and verse.

This summer, 186 young people travelled with our International Volunteer and Leadership Trips to the Maasai Mara region of Kenya to volunteer in communities, build schools and develop leadership skills. Thanks to the hard work, dedication and drenched T-shirts of the trip participants, Free The Children built five beautiful new schools serving three communities!

In August, construction of the newest school in the Emori Joi community was completed. On opening day, more than 600 community members gathered together for a joyous celebration. During the ceremony, groups in the community each prepared something special to show their gratitude: two women’s groups sang songs, the elders put on a skit and the school choirs performed.

The Grade 7 class provided the highlight of the day with a poem they wrote for the school opening. Standing proudly, the Grade 7 students recited the poem:

“On behalf of the Emori Joi community,
We want to say thank you for building us a school.
Through your efforts, the construction here, we have a place to study,
And our promise back to you, to show our appreciation,
We will have a never ending energy to study.”

By working together with the children of Kenya, we are already creating a better world.
